We are a group of queer people and queer allies here at JUC committed to raising awareness of issues that affect the queer community and fostering communication between queer people and our allies. We will be turning that awareness and education into action, including but not limited to, helping our unhoused find refuge and helping our queer youth find safety and community.

Ever wondered why smallpox no longer ravages the world? After viewing a short documentary (Neil Halloran’s The Plea) that describes what it took to eradicate smallpox we’ll have comments and a discussion with JUC’s own Dan Matlock, MD on why vaccinations work, and why it takes broad participation to keep all of us safe.

Turn pumpkins into houses! Sign up to help us unload pumpkins on Friday, October 3rd or 10th, and sell pumpkins from Oct 4 through Halloween to raise funds for our 2025 Habitat for Humanity Home. This a super fun opportunity for kids to help out; they make the best salespeople! Costumes encouraged! Shifts are 4 hours (10AM – 2PM and 2PM – 6PM), but can be split if needed. For those of you who have enjoyed Yoga as you are or Qigong in the past or for those of you new who are interested in some simple movements to keep your body and mind healthy, please come and enjoy this open class. All levels welcome!

Join J Harkins for a workshop that is all about pronouns. This workshop will allow parents, caregivers, friends, to take a deep dive into the hows and whys of pronouns in order to learn about how to support and affirm trans and non-binary folks. Come with an open mind and an open heart and be prepared to practice!

Visit a local business with information that explains how they can prepare for the possibility of an ICE raid to better protect their business and their employees. This is the Prevention work in Immigrant Support. Those who sign up will receive a 15 minute orientation and materials in order to visit one business. There will be an orientation Sunday October 12th and at other times depending on the needs of those who sign up. More specifics about time and place will be sent out when you sign up. You will choose a business during the Orientation.

Luke Campbell, Homeless Response Coordinator for Jefferson County and Kory Kolar, Homeless Navigator will offer an update on the unhoused population in Jefferson County, along with the planned response for severe weather sheltering this winter and volunteer opportunities.

Join JUC’s Immigrant Support Team when they attend the October 13th Vigil at ICE’s GEO Detention Center in Aurora. Vigils are held weekly to support the Detainees and demand their release. Joining the Vigil is a very moving experience that will include speaking, chanting, singing, some communication from detainees or their families. Meet at JUC between 5pm and 5:15pm to carpool to Aurora (about 40 minutes). The Vigil begins at 6pm and can go as long as 8pm, although it could finish earlier.

Our new Queer Social Justice Group will be providing a time to talk about gender. We’ll introduce how pronouns can be used by gender diverse people and provide examples of the transgender experience. Questions are welcome. Celebrate gender diversity with us and gain some insight into becoming an ally to transgender people.

Join fellow JUCers for an afternoon of ecstatic drumming, and possibly dancing. No drumming experience required, no age or physical limits, beyond the ability to stay up til 8 pm. Bring a hand drum if you have one, but we also have extra drums and other instruments to share. Dancers are always welcome!
