Members of UU the Vote and JUC Community Action Network (JUC CAN) met to discuss the issues on the 2024 ballot. Based on our research and our understanding of our UU values, these are our recommendations. Take the time to learn more about what a YES or a NO vote means and vote for what you value. If you don’t see a measure below, we are neutral.

RECOMMEND SUPPORT

  • Jeffco Measure 1A – Revenue Retention Measure
Jefferson County provides essential services and is limited in its ability to do so by refund requirements, leading to cutting services for some of our most vulnerable residents including mental health funding. This measure would reduce some of those limitations. www.YesOn1AJeffco.com
  • RTD 7A – Regional Transportation District
A yes vote on 7A affirms our values of economic and environmental justice; cuts to public transportation harm low-income Coloradans and increase trips by cars. For more information: What is 7A for the Regional Transportation District (RTD)?
  • Amendment 79 – Constitutional Right to Abortion
Unitarian Universalism affirms access to reproductive health care, including abortion, and ability to make reproductive decisions independent of government involvement at the state and local levels. Repealing the limit on public funding to abortion services ensures those who rely on state health care can also access abortion care.
  • Amendment G – Modify Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities
Disabled veterans are at risk for homelessness and this measure would enable a vulnerable population to have a better chance of staying in their homes. This supports the multi-year work of JUC CAN to ensure that people remain housed.
  • Amendment H – Judicial Discipline Procedures and Confidentiality
This measure would offer more information and transparency to voters regarding judicial discipline and possible misconduct. This increases access to the democratic process.
  • Amendment J – Repealing the Constitutional Definition of Marriage
As UUs we affirm the ability to create the families we want and legal protection for that is essential. The Colorado Constitution still contains language that defines marriage as only between a man and woman that would be eliminated if this measure passess. Learn more
  • Proposition KK – Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax
This measure will fund crime victim support services, mental health services for veterans and youth, and school safety programs, all of which are sorely lacking in support. For more information: Yes on Prop KK

RECOMMEND OPPOSE

  • Amendment 80 – Constitutional Right to School Choice
This measure would pave the way for a state-wide private school voucher program, diverting more funds from the public education system to private (including religious) schools, and home-schooling.  Colorado’s public schools, particularly in rural districts, are already underfunded. This amendment undermines equal access to education, a cornerstone of our UU values.   Amendment-80_English.pdf (coloradofiscal.org)
  • Proposition 128 – Parole Eligibility for Crimes of Violence
Our UU values lead us to work to dismantle racism in our institutions and to support justice, equity and compassion in human relations; the inherent worth and dignity of every person; and the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.  Our criminal justice system has a disproportionate impact on BIPOC individuals who are more likely to be charged and convicted of crimes. According to the ACLU of Colorado, Proposition 128 will not decrease crime; instead it will increase state spending on prisons, decrease safety for wardens, and jeopardize good behavior incentives.
  • Proposition 130 – Funding for Law Enforcement
As UUs, we aspire to a world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.  Proposition 130 diverts funding from essential services that are proven to increase and support public safety, such as education resources, mental health services, co-responder programs, and community development.
  • Proposition 131 – Establishing All-Candidate Primary and Ranked Choice Voting
As UUs, we believe that all persons should have a vote about the things that concern them.  This is not a true rank choice voting measure, which we do support. Proposition 131 promotes a voting system that would complicate the voting system and likely confuse voters, weaken voter participation (especially in lower-income communities), and favor wealthier candidates and donors.
