If compassion means feeling the suffering and sorrows of another, the first step must be being able to hear those sorrows. Too often we find ourselves planning our argument, rather than hearing what another has said. Or as the Buddhist teaching tale puts it, our cup is too full for the words of another. How might we engage in the spiritual practice of listening, in these times, and in all times?
