If we had cheap electricity galore we could use it to produce hydrogen as an energy carrier and give it a much larger and cleaner role in key industrial processes like steel and fertilizer production and in transportation. It could also stabilize our power grid by siphoning off excess power from intermittent wind and solar. That is the Department of Energy’s new “Big Idea”, and teams at NREL and across the nation are exploring its possibilities.
