Just Neighboring- The All-Church Project
Through Just Neighboring, our congregation partners for justice in ways that offer all of our members and friends the opportunity to deepen, connect and engage for a better world. We partner with Together Colorado using a community organizing model to bring about structural change for justice. We are currently researching the issues of mental health, affordable housing and homelessness to find an action where JUC can make a difference in Jefferson County and we welcome input.
We also develop leadership and programs to support engagement with the city of Edgewater. We partner with the Edgewater Collective and other community organizations to identify and address needs. There are several opportunities to enrich our lives and the lives of those with whom we connect:
- Lumberg Reading Club (formerly Reading Buddies): Lumberg Elementary, 6705 W. 22nd Ave. Mentors and Substitutes needed! A great way to get involved with children. Read with first-through third-graders 3-4 p.m. on two days of your choice Monday through Thursday. The Lumberg Reading Club was recently featured in the Chalkbeat article “Two Hours of Reading Club Each Week is Helping Students at One School Learn to Read.”
- Food Bank for Seniors: Seniors at the Edgewater Plaza, 2250 Eaton St., need help with their food bank every other Friday morning each month from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They already have an arranged food delivery, but they need help unloading boxes, setting up tables, distributing the food and putting tables away. Sign up to volunteer!
- Homeless Breakfast: Every Sunday at Sloan’s Lake Community Church, 2796 Utica St., volunteers prepare and serve a hot breakfast. About 60 people are served each Sunday. Food prep begins at 7 a.m. and breakfast is served at 9 a.m. Two volunteers are needed each Sunday. Sign up to volunteer!
- Friendly Visitor Program: Volunteers are needed to work with Senior Connections in Edgewater to establish an ongoing, supportive relationship with an older adult who may be homebound, socially isolated, disabled, or have special needs. Contact can be in person, over the phone or via e-mail.
